Respecting our moms, wives, and other women we are blessed to know

Note: This sermon or Bible study is great as a Mother's day devotion for men or for a study in a men's prayer breakfast; it would also be a great reminder as a Sunday morning sermon for both gals and guys as to the importance Christ put on women.

Worksheet:  Here is worksheet for this study. Respecting Women Worksheet

Men’s Bible Study:
Respecting our Moms, our wives, and other women we are blessed to know

Introduction: We are living in a culture today in which Christian and secular men do not know how to treat and respect women; we have lost sight of men being the leaders of both church and family life and day to day living. When we turn to the Savior, we see how He lived life among them and was always a blessing.

1. How Jesus respected His earthly mother
2. How Jesus loved women
3. How we are to act to all women

1. How Jesus respected His earthly mother

A. He respected Mary’s relationship to Him.
“And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” Luke 2:51

B. He respected the wishes of His earthly mother. [In turn, she encouraged others to trust Him]
“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” John 2:5

C. He took care of His mother, entrusting her care to other believers.
“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” John 19:26-27

2. How Jesus loved women

“The book of Luke is unusual among the ancient books of the world. Luke took to great care to record the emotional and physical responses of a woman in her pregnancy ... I know of no other book in ancient history that is concerned about and cares for the feelings of a woman as she is carrying her child or cares for her child. But God thought these things were important enough to include then in His eternal word ... Jesus’ sense of manhood was never threatened by the tenderness of a woman.” - Doug Clark

A. A woman knelt at Jesus’ feet and washed them in repentance. He never made her feel embarrassed, nor was He Himself embarrassed. Luke 7:36-50

B. Unlike rabbi’s of His day, Jesus was the only one who included women as His disciples. In fact, they ministered to Him when the mobs got crazy. Luke 10:38-42 - “38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.”

C. Jesus was sensitive to and lifted the burdens of women with social and religious handicaps.

- Even sick women, in middle eastern culture, would have made sure to take care of guests; but Jesus healed Peter’s mother in law first, caring for her needs. Luke 4:38-39.
- When a woman became a widow in the Middle East, it was tragic because there was no one to take care of her; Jesus realizing that during a funeral procession, a widow marched behind her son’s casket - He raised her son from the dead. Luke 7:11-17

D. Jesus calls women into equal relationship and discipleship and healing with Him. Luke 13:10-17 [we studied this passage a few weeks ago for Wed night service]
- Jesus was teaching the scriptures on the Sabbath, yet He put that aside for a sick woman; he interrupted the teaching time.
- Whereas the synagogue was a man’s place to worship, yet He called the woman into the sanctuary of the men
- He spoke to her (a no-no culturally).
- He laid hands on her to heal her
- He neither look at a woman to lust after her nor followed the traditions of the Pharisees who avoided women; instead, He had the utmost respect for them in terms of their relationship to God.

3. How we are to act to all women

We can honor women by showing them the same love and respect that Jesus, through His life, and example showed.

Doug Clark, in his article “Jesus and women” has written:

“We live in a world that sentimentalizes mothers and women in general.” He writes that after Mother’s day is over, do we continue to treat women in high esteem? He says of the culture over all, no:  “The United States has one of the highest rates of violence against women and abuse of young girls. We are one of the world’s deepest cesspools of pornography. In many ways, we have little room to criticize or condemn the Muslim. ... But Jesus is the perfect man, the man God wants every man to emulate. This is the kind of man God wants ever woman to know in her life.”

Here are some overall guidelines:

1. Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
2. Matthew 5:28, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
3. 1 Timothy 5:3, “Honor widows that are widows indeed.”

The Prophetic Word of Holiness

Sermon Outline
The Prophetic Word of Holiness
Scripture:  1 Thessalonians 1 - 5
Introduced May 2011 / Written some time in 2008

Sermon Outline

Introduction:  The Lord is bodily returning to this earth (Acts 1:11; Matthew 24:30).  In 1 Thessalonians, Paul shows an intense love and appreciation for the Thessalonians and their faith.

            - The Thessalonians were examples, 1 Thessalonians 1:7

            - Paul was like a father to them, 2:11

            - He commanded that they should love one another, 4:9

            - Yet, what were they missing? [after all, Paul wrote to them to help them in their spiritual journey.]

Today, we have an increased interest in the end of the world.

            - What will happen?  (every world view has a different answer.)

            - There are tons of literature that believe Jesus will come at certain times.

            - There are tons of magazines.

            - There are tons of end time books

We know for sure that without holiness, we are not ready for the return of Christ.  An accumulation of knowledge, books, and end time novels do not prepare us fully for the Lord’s return.  * A person who strives at a holy life is more prepared than someone who is merely a “prophecy buff”.  In fact, we have actually met worldly people who loved fictional end time books (can’t tell you which ones, or we will break copyright – but let’s just say they are very popular)

Overview of 1 Thessalonians 1-5 – How You Can Prepare for Jesus’s return.

  1. Prepare for Jesus’s return by turning from all idols.  1:9-10
    See also 1 John 5:21; 1 Corinthians 10:14
    1. Turn to God first; He will enable us to overcome the idolatry
    2. Your salvation was not of your own; neither is the Christian walk.
    3. Idols can be behaviors or people or things.  Idols have these characteristics:

                                                              i.      you return to them again and again

                                                            ii.      It brings you comfort

iii.      You begin to resemble it

iv.      You know its an idol, but you refuse to acknowledge it.

  1.  Prepare for Jesus’s return by being your Pastor’s glory and joy  2:18-20
    1. What a joy as a Pastor to see Christians living a holy life.
    2. Notice in this verse the ministry of the DEVIL à v. 18 – Satan “hindered us”
    3. Notice, however, how proud Paul was that these Christians were progressing.  When the LORD Jesus returns, Paul says – I will take these Christians and present them to the Lord Jesus.

  1. Prepare for Jesus’s return by learning to love one another.  3:12-13
NOTE:  Notice, coming with all his Saints.  Coming of Jesus will be 1 coming in 2 phases:

    1. Coming for his saints such as 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (gathering together unto him)
    2. Coming with his saints such as 1 Thessalonians 3:13

This [love one another] is the commandment we seek to avoid.  We want to learn more about Jesus, the Bible, prophecy, the tabernacle, etc.  And all these are good, but God has a plan for us.  His plan is to be like His Son.  Jesus knew the Old & New Testaments thoroughly and used them when necessary, but, He also taught us how to love God and others.

Love – an affectionate feeling that is proved by our actions of kindness to the ones we have the feelings to.  God’s love – His abundant desire to do good in our lives.

We will hold grudges against people, but Christians can’t pretend to hold grudges forever.  God’s love shed in our heart comes out!

Romans 5:8 – God’s love is characterized by a difficult, yet attainable, ideal.  God commendeth his love toward us, while we were sinners, Christ died for us.

  1. Prepare for Jesus’s return by realizing who is going to call you at the Day of Reckoning – God.  4:15-18

    1. Sometimes we chose our friends and people we “hang-out-with” by whether we like them or not.  There are so many Christians who say they love God, but fail to live holy lives.  How will they be able to live with Him who is Holy.
    2. Joel 2:1 – [not a direct quote] - Blow a trumpet in Zion, shout it on the mountain, blow a trumpet in Zion – for the Day of the Lord is come!
    3. There is a time coming when God Himself will call us to this appointment.  An appointment where we will stand before Him.

  1. Prepare for the Lord’s return by striving for holiness.  5:22-24

Why are we striving for His holiness?  Why is the Lord’s return characterized with holiness?  And why will the place of our future house be holy?

    1. Our age is characterized by lawlessness.  Hurt feelings, disobedience to God’s commandments, decadence.  The Spirit of this age
    2. The spirit of this age is trying to seduce last day Christians.  We are no different than the Thessalonians.  Even the simple, basic things in life seem to be corrupted.

Conclusion:  God is calling out a holy people unto Himself.

Revelation 18:4 – Come out of Babylon!

Babylon is to be destroyed.  Revelation 19:7-8 – Fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.

Sermon Outline Creation Date:  2008.  This sermon was created in 2008 for preaching; I can’t remember if I preached it!  No matter – I hope you can use it in your own ministry.

Don’t be fooled by the title “The Prophetic Word of Holiness”.  By this, we mean – all prophecy today is telling forth God’s word in the Bible … I do not believe new revelation is being given to us today.  Still, this title might be confusing to some.  So, feel free to change it.

You most likely should tailor this to your own situation.

In fact, if you haven’t figure out by now:  I write these sermons so that you WILL edit it, or use it, or modify it.  I am not offended in the least … however, I would like to have a “stories/testimony” section on my blog – so please email me at pjmarkavage@gmail.com and tell me how you are doing with these sermons.

Love Jesus, Hate the Flesh - Sermon Starter

Sermon Outline
Love Jesus, Hate the Flesh
Scripture:  Varied
Introduced May 2011

Outline of the Sermon

Introduction:  A number of years ago, I attended a Bible Conference in which the speaker said – “Following Jesus is painful, if you love your flesh!”  The flesh wants more food, more romance, more pleasure.  It is a veritable giant of godless passions that always says, “If you give me more than before, then I’ll have enough.”  Our culture caters to our flesh.  Newspaper?  What do we see:

  • Lust of the flesh – Leaders in immorality.
  • Lust of the eyes – Constant corporate greediness
  • Pride of life – look what money does to people.

The same can be said of secular television.  Following Jesus is painful if you love your flesh.  Some of us are in hell today because we vex ourselves with sin and Jesus is trying to work something deeper in us:

1.          We Cannot Serve the flesh
a.      Matthew 19:21 – Jesus asked the rich young ruler to stop loving this world; he wouldn’t.
b.      Matthew 6:24 – No man can serve 2 masters.
2.          We must not pamper the flesh
a.      Matthew 5:27-30 – Cut off yourself from this life; remove the wood from the fires of your passion; don’t let romantic sins entangle you to try you, kill you, and perhaps even prove you never belonged to God.
b.      We must not pamper the flesh – for as a little monster, it will not give up or give in until it wins.
3.          We must trust that God will take care of our needs and legitimate desires.
a.      Matthew 6:29-34 – Apart from God’s provisions, don’t value the flesh.
b.      Romans 7:18 – In my flesh, my lower nature (not just the skin, blood, and corpuscles), dwells no good thing.  The flesh reasons and tries to convince us why we should sin … it philosophizes why feeding it is okay … God tells us, don’t value either its desires or logical reasoning.
4.          If I follow Jesus, it will be painful to my flesh.  Romans 7:21-25:
a.      There is a war between my mind and flesh … my mind interacts with both the flesh and the spirit part of me.  So, feed my mind God’s word, and then I purify myself.  Romans 12:2.  I become transformed.  We must allow God’s word in us to change us; as contrite as the saying is – the battlefield is in the mind.
b.      The stronger the mind is and the stronger our new spirit man is – the easier it is to say no to the flesh.

Conclusion / Decision / Invitation:
What does your flesh want today that you want to give it?  How will you stop? Following Jesus is painful if you love your flesh.  We are blind if we are not consciously pursuing a life in God through Jesus Christ.  Let's have an abundant entrance into the kingdom.

Decision / Invitation

Sermon Creation Date:  Can’t remember; it was written, however, during a personal men’s retreat I attended.

Additions:
1.  In point three of this sermon – we say:    We must trust that God will take care of our needs and legitimate desires.  Sometimes it is hard for hearers to understand what it means to “trust”.  The ministry of Living Waters has given a good illustration that I use often when given the opportunity to teach.

When you sit on a chair, you simply know, believe, expect that the four legs under the chair will keep you up.  You simply rest on the chair, knowing it will keep you up.  So too, to trust in God means to rest in Him knowing, believing, and expecting He will take care of His own.

2.  Also, if you have been noticing, some of the sermons have my own personal experiences embedded in them.  Not to worry, you can reword the section either with a similar experience of yours or eliminate it all together.  I hope these sermon outlines have been a blessing to you.
